Quarterly favorites

Hi everyone!

The first quarter of the year is over, and I wanted to try a different post here on my blog in which I can reflect back on how my year is going, talking a little bit about my life and some of my favorite things I’ve done during the first three months of the year. I am going to try to do this post every three months or so, let me know if you like it and if you’re interested in this type of posts.

Romance has been my go to genre this year. It might be the sad circumstances in which we are currently living, the level of stress because of the uncertainty of the world or the fact that my social interactions are very limited, but romance has been such a light in my life this past three months.

I keep coming back to it again ang again. I don’t know if I’ll reach a burnout eventually but I don’t see it anytime soon because it’s bringing so much joy to my life. I have also acquired kindle unlimited and I’ve discovered a bunch of new romance authors I’m absolutely in love with.

One of them is definitely Meghan Quinn. The Change Up is my favorite book by her that I’ve read so far. It combined some of my favorite romance tropes and it did that so perfectly. It has childhood friends to lovers, forced proximity, the only one bed trope, grumpy-sunshine. It’s just perfection, and I have read another book by this same author and I also gave that one 5 stars. Her writing and characters really do it for me and I’m sooo happy to have discovered her this year.

Another romance author I have to give a shout out is Talia Hibbert with her Brown Sisters trilogy. I read Take a Hint, Dani Brown in February and I still think about these two love birds from time to time. I’m saving the third one because I just don’t want to say goodbye to these characters, but I do own a bunch of other books by Talia so I’m sure I’ll start another one and fall in love with it straight away.

Lastly, I wanted to mention Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall. I listened to this one on audiobook and I implore you to go that route because the narrator did such an incredible work. This features the fake-dating trope, but it has to be one of my favorite executions of it. The two love interests, Luc and Oliver complement each other so much and it has some of the best banter I’ve ever encountered. The third act conflict was also so good, it wasn’t unnecessary drama or miscommunication, it actually made sense and it helped develop one of the characters even more which was just, perfection.

I couldn’t not mention my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE story I’ve read so far this year: Lore Olympus by Rachel Smythe. This is a webcomic that you can read through the Webtoon app, it’s completely free and honestly, the best Hades and Persephone retelling I’ve ever read in my life. The art style is truly stunning, out of this world gorgeous. The characters are some of the most complex and lovable I’ve ever read about, and there are so many meaningful relationships to root for, not only romantic ones, although I’m dying for the two main carharacters to get together, but also there are some beautiful friendships and family dynamics that make for really tender moments. It’s also incredibly funny and relatable while following Gods and Goddesses. I cannot recommend it enough.

Last but certainly not least, I wanted to mention my favorite non-fiction book I’ve read this year so far: Whites: on race and other falsehoods by Othega Uwagba. This is a non-fiction essay about racism, it’s microagressions and also systemic racism. The author also reflects on the Black Lives Matter movement, specifically in the performative activism that has followed up. It’s one of the most honest pieces of literature I’ve read. It made for such a raw and uncomfortable read for me, which was the point of the entire book. It’s incredible and really short so I encourage all of you to read it for yourselves.

My newfound obsession are true crime shows. I have binged watched almost every one available on Netflix. This is something I hadn’t previously watched, but this Christmas I put on Don’t Fuck With Cats randomly and I couldn’t stop thinking about it and talking about it with my friends and family. Since then, I’ve watched many more, my favorites being:

They are all incredibly disturbing and very dark so please proceed with caution. There are some very graphic depictions and pictures throughout the three documentaries so they are definitely hard stories to swallow.

I’ve also been loving the Netflix show Mind Hunter. I watched this because my sister saw how interested I’ve become in true crime and she recommended the show to me. It’s based on true events, and we are following two FBI agents as they interview different killers to try to understand the psychology and circumstances that lead someone to commit a murder. I’m on season two and absolutely loving it, but I’m saving it and watching it very slowly since we don’t know when season three will be release or even if it’ll happen, so I want to make sure I savor the few episodes I have left.

The last TV show I loved is WandaVision. I’m not a huge MARVEL fan to be honest. Superheroes kind of bore me but I have watched the MARVEL movies since I have a friend that’s obsessed and makes me watch everything in this universe. He recommended the tv show to me and I decided to give it a try. I ended up loving it! Wanda wasn’t a character I had given much thought to previous to the show, but she’s now become one of my favorites from this world. The show portrayed grief in such a raw and honest way that took me completely by surprised. Plus, the aesthetic through the decades was just phenomenal!

I only have one movie to talk about, but it’s one I’ve rewatched twice already and I’m eagerly awaiting a third rewatch.

Palm Springs is just such a fun, light-hearted movie that it’s also really funny, with great banter and a very interesting premise. I love the actors it features, I love the plot and the romance. It’s just so much fun!

This Christmas my sister gifted me Harry Style’s album Fine Line and that’s what I’ve been listening to on repeat almost every day. I adore the songs on it, they make me feel so relaxed whilst lifting me up at the same time. They are the perect wake up song in the morning, as well as motivation songs for whenever I need a push to start studying or concentrating on a task. HS is definitely my most listened to artist of the year so far.

My favorites are Golden and Watermelon Sugar

Also, his cover of Juice by Lizzo lives rent free in my mind

My favorite thing that has happened to me so far this year is that I’ve found a job as an Occupational Therapist. It is my first “stable” job as an occupational therapist and although it isn’t perfect, I am really enjoying working and learning as I go. I have a really good work schedule that lets me study or work a second job in the evenings, but it also allows me to save up some money.

I would love to know what are some of your favorite things from the first three months of the year, let me know!

Until next time,
