A boy comes to terms with his identity as a mixed-race gay teen – then at university he finds his wings as a drag artist, The Black Flamingo. A bold story about the power of embracing your uniqueness. Sometimes, we need to take charge, to stand up wearing pink feathers – to show ourselves to the world in bold colour.
This little story managed to be so meaningful in such few pages that I can’t wait for the rest of the world to fall in love with it.
Let me start by saying that this book is gorgeous. From the cover, to the beautiful writing and poems to the little illustrations that were sprinkled throughout. I listened to this on audio and I loved the experience as well, especially since it’s narrated by the author himself and did an amazing job. But, I also followed along with my digital copy in my ebook and seeing all those illustrations added so much and the experience.
I think this story is going to a big impact on some people. There is something so powerful about Michael’s story, his relationships with friends and family.
This is ultimately a story about identity, gender, sexuality, drag queens & kings, finding your place in the world, the people with whom you belong.
It’s such an important story because is so real and it’s going to be so relatable to so manny people in the world.
What an important and powerful read.
